My stone cottage wall has been rendered in patches as and when money was available by the previous occupier.
The cement render mix is incredibly hard and has stuck like the preverbial.
Trouble is it looks a mess, so...

Can it be given another coat all over for asthetic purposes.

I have been told that it can be painted with somthing to help adhesion...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thank-you in advance...

What kind of preparation would be needed apart from removing all looses and flakey bits...

Thanks...

If it is sound , all loose removed .

Can you make indentations in it with the claw of a hammer, or similar?

If so go over the surface , with these about 4-6" apart.

This will do two things - first it you will hear any live spots which must come off, and secondly you are helping with a mehanical key while you are at it.

Next, wet down and brush off.

While damp, apply SBR:OPC:sand (1:1:1) with a brush, rubbing in to all indentations. Sand should be sharp or fine sharp , washed, salt free. OPC is cement

You could scud/throw this on, but it will be easier for you to use a brush - gloves and glasses and long sleeves (or vaseline on the arms).

This will give you raised rough key to render on to.

Leave 24 hours.

If you feel the slurry is not rough enough, or you are a belt and braces person, then paint on a SBR:OPC 1:1 , and apply your scratch coat to this while tacky. You can render as normal on to this

Make sure you wash off the slurry from surfaces, tools etc, because it is a pure bEgger to get off.

rendaid is a good prep for this kind of thing pre baged ,tight coat ,stiple, then render.

rendaid is very good also, for flat surfaces - and runnning it over with a roller is easy for a stipple- can be hard to get hold of in some outlets
