The back of my Victorian semi is rendered with (I think) a Terylene type of material. It's cracked and blown in places, is trapping water behind it and is generally an eyesore. I'd like to get it removed, but I assume there's a good chance that doing this will damage the bricks underneath. Anyone got any advice or experiences they'd like to share?

Thanks,
Andy

I think you mean Tyrolean.

It's unlikely that you'll get away with simply removing the render. The brickwork underneath is probably not built from facing bricks. Even if it were, it's likely that the render is stuck on well enough to take the faces off when it's removed.

I've recently helped remove the render from all four walls of my house. Some of it came off easily, some was very hard work. Quite a few of the bricks suffered enough damage to need patching up with mortar before the new render could be applied.

take the loose tyrolean off and leave the solid stuff on!
pva the whole lot and then give a scratchcoat.

then you can render, or pebbledash.
