Rendering an outside retaining wall

Want to render a 3' tall block wall in the "mediterranean" style (i.e. uneven finish, should manage that !). Getting confusing info when surfing so, is a sand/cement mix ok or should I go for a sand/lime/cement mix ? And what sort of thickness should I lay on, I've an old roll of chicken wire I'm intending to build over.

Any help much appreciated.

i am not a builder, but i did something very similar, sand & cement no lime ( i think the lime is to slow the curing process) as for thickness about 6-7 mm thicker than the chicken wire
