Hi

I have a garden wall constructed of the once popular floral type design cinder blocks which you can see through.

I want to get this rendered, do I need to fill the gaps in the blocks or can they be rendered as they are?

Its an interesting question, others on here more qualified than me in rendering might come up with better suggestions.

You could fix SS Expanded Metal Lath fixed to the blockwork over a background of black felt paper.
Then apply a two coat render.

Or fill the gaps in the blocks with semi-dry sand and cement - allow to dry - and then render as above.

Neither method inspires confidence and ss lath is not cheap.

Whatever, do not paint the raw floral cinder blocks.

Sounds a bit dodgy, probably less work to replace the wall!

What would be the issue with filling the gaps and rendering?

Also, I the blocks seem to have been painted by the previous owners, what's the issue with that?

Thanks

Painted how? Are we talking about the blocks in the pic?

Painting any kind of masonry or render will require further painting maintenance, sometimes at pretty short intervals in the future. Weathering begins to take an instant toll of the fresh finish.

Rough faced blocks collect dirt and algae - and are best paint sprayed to even get a start.
Moisture can easily get behind the paint, and then its a case of endless paint renewals.
