Hi There

Can anyone please point me in the right direction.

I have had an extension heightened, original was rendered to roof height, now we have increased the height by 1.5 metres, that area also needs rendering.

I have asked the builder if he can render from the original height to the new height, he says it will always be noticeable, however I have seen other render jobs where they create a lip.

So yes you will always be able to see it, but it looks like an intentional part of the build, my real questions are is this feasible..? Has this type of rendering got a name..? Is there a special type of bead that is used for this job...?

Thank You in advance.

Gary01Porter, good evening.

Easiest way?? would be to fit a "Bell-cast bead" at the junction of old and new, a bell cast bead is designed to be installed at the foot [lowest part of the render which will overlap --say--- the exposed brickwork below] the bell cast is designed to throw rain water off and outwards from the exposed brick work below, and it goes a long way to preventing rain water running down the render to what if you consider it is a very, very vulnerable junction between the render and the brickwork, which is below and set back from the face of the render, the rain water "tends" to run down the render and then percolate into this very vulnerable joint

OK there will be a visible line around the junction.

How about you consider using a "different" type [surface finish] of render on the new work? A contrast can at times act as what could appear as an original design feature ?

Or? how about a "cement band"?? say a 100 mm. high cement band at the junction with a bellcast top and bottom of the cenent band?

Long time ago, a well known Architect I worked with told me that if there is a screw up then make a feature of it??

Thank You for your answer, I agree wholeheartedly with the architect.

We cant use another finish as the current is jagged not straight, the idea of a band sounds ok but seems like extra work and I'm actually trying to keep the new rendering to the minimum.

Bell Cast Bead sounds perfect to me, however the property is abroad and I'm having serious trouble getting this idea across.

Cheers
