Rendering outside of house using building sand

Where I came from in the Midlands, "everyone" used plastering sand to make a sand/cement wall render ie slightly gritty but not as gritty as sharp or washed or grit sand (so many names for the same thing!)

Here in North Wales you cant get plastering sand - only bs or sharp. Merchants all say the locals use bs and its fine.

Thoughts? Does it depend on the render thickness required? Am concerned about cracking.

My pebble dash was fixed using builders sand, guys doing it have been using nothing else for 30 years without problem.

Building sand/soft sand has round grains sharp sand and plastering sand has angular grains which binds better the building /soft sand is not washed and has lots of silt in it which creates shrinkage and cracks
