renering indoors

have to cover an internal feature brick wall with render, the bricks have a raked finish, i will need to fill the morter gaps between the bricks before i finnish with the final coat of rendering. should i use some pva adhesive before i start or will the render stick ok, will 4: 1 sand cement be the right thing to build up ? i have to cover 2.4 meters high by 3 meters wide . how much material will i need?
