Hi all! Just a householder here, with experience of DIYing bits in an an older house but pretty bloody clueless ;)

We've decided to try to renovate the knobs on our internal doors; they're in various states but there's a pic of one of the worst ones attached. Previous owners look to have tried to paint them, but not done a great job. We're happy to repaint them but want to avoid the drip / brush marks etc. They don't have to be perfect, but better than they are.

Thinking was:
1. File down the drip marks and fill any chips with eg polyfilla
2. Sand down with sanding sponge
3. Paint!

I imagine the existing "finish" is the result of applying thickish gloss paint by brush. If I don't want to try and repeat this, suppose the obvious options are using spray paint or dipping? Can I "thin out" gloss paint to make drips/runs less likely / make it easier for dipping? All advice on either approach (or other ideas) very much appreciated.

Oh and we're looking for one more of these knobs btw, if anyone happens to have one handy :giggle:

Thanks!

Yep ...
Light sand
Fill chips if you want
Spray paint

I think spray paint would be best if you want a really good finish. Don't apply too much at once or you'll get drips.

I think you may be missing part of the handle/knob. The part which is screwed to the door. See the following

Sometimes they are metal, wood or ceramic.
