Repainting bannister and spindles

Hi all,

Looking for advice on best method to repaint a bannister and spindles. They are currently a gloss white, and we want to repaint a different shade of white.

Would it be sufficient to simply put a couple of layers of our new eggshell paint on top of the existing? And maybe an extra cover on too for the bannister?

Or should there be an intermediate layer of primer or something for the new paint to stick better? (Fully removing the existing paint isn’t an option)

You can if you thoroughly clean then sand the gloss, and apply an appropriate primer
