Hi I have an old metal fence and handrail going up my outside steps, so in the past I would have cleaned it up and red lead it then gloss it, but was thinking of just cleaning it and spraying a hammerite type paint straight on the bare metal. Opinions please ?
Thanks

I guess it all depends on how much time and expense you wish to spend on it, but Hammerite doesn’t kill rust in any way - despite what’s claimed. It also doesn’t stick well to any unprepared surfaces.
It is however a quick and easy cover up!

An Aluminium filled primer at least protects the metal a bit, it does need all the rust removing first, or it will convert the layer of rust next to it back to metal and leave a gap underneath so it will then flake off.
So remove rust with a wirebrush followed by "Naval Jelly" then prime, up to you after that, but it stands a chance of lasting if you do those.
