Repairing a terribly “repaired” door

Hi all,

First time poster, long term lurker.

I have finally bought my own place, after many years of saving. Upon getting the keys I noticed the previous owner had decided to attempt a repair on some snagging issues in the new build (4 year old) apartment I have purchased. Most are passable (barely), but the property entrance is shocking. They have filled gaps with what can only be described as MULTIPLE tubes worth of silicon sealant.

After receiving quotes from a few decorators who I think have all just decided they dont want the job, I have taken to the toolstation catalogue to attempt to resolve myself. Im a fairly competent DIYer, but thought I could do with getting opinions on best way forward for this one.

I attach two pictures. The first shows the door as I found it. The second after I spent a great sunday afternoon removing all that horrific silicon from the frame and surrounding walls.

What is now left is some fairly large gaps around the wooden frame, and of course some painting.

My thoughts on how to resolve:

- Use pollyfilla to even out the wall around the wall and attempt to get the majority of the cracks in the corners (depth wise)
- Sand
- White paint the surrounding walls
- Matching paint for door frame (I have the colour code)
- Decorators caulk for the final beeding of the edge

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or any tools that could help with pollyfilla-ing in internal corners like this? I have previously resorted to using my finger for this sort of thing.

Thanks so much in advance
Matt

Just throwing some ideas at you.

You could stick some plasterboard to the top.
I've done it today on my own window to pack out.
Block sand to get a square plasterboard edge.
I still need to fill and paint.

Just going to mention the nets here are temporary and sag a bit but we are getting blinds soon when I've finished filling and decorating.

If you stick board on the top that will sort it as you have loads of frame thickness.
You could do that to the left side with 9.5m board I guess. Maybe?

Think id consider a small wooden bead on either side only , although you could go all the way around depending on how you finish the top. I stick bead with caulk as it can be painted. Just give it a week to dry as caulk can be a problem if you paint too soon.

If you decide to fill around walls to make good then do it by eye to get straight. Block sand so its flat. Do walls first. When finished fill the frame.
Then paint first coat and caulk around. Caulk sticks better to paint.

You have options

Timber, or even plastic quadrant, tacked into place, then painted.

(As above) A timber molding would be the quickest. Difficult on the right hand side though given that the frame only seems to extend by 6-9mm.

Personally, I would squirt in some expanding foam and then use a light weight filler such as Red Devil OneTime.
