Replace Drayton combistat with digital

Sorry I must have def misunderstood then, I thought you said I could this with something like the rf901? Or is that battery operated and doesn't need perm live? Apologies, I've got v confused with this by the looks
Yes I think you have got confused. Let me try to simplify it:

Any battery operated wired thermostat is simply powered by batteries and the switching happens behind it, so doesn’t matter about a permanent live, so the 2290b was the example I gave.

Any wireless thermostat requires a receiver to be hard wired which would require a permanent live and permanent neutral, such as the RF901, Hive et al. The thermostat part of this which switches the heating on and off remotely via the receiver is usually battery powered.

Okay got that, thanks. The confusion is because you said the rf901 would be direct fit/swap, but then you just said a wireless stat would need a perm going to it - I thought mine had perm and switched live connections?
So as it stands, I can't have a wireless stat unless I get some wiring mods done? I'm which case id be better off replacing the programmer

No, I said a Hive or similar would be a straight swap for your programmer. Post#10. Yours only has a switched live from the programmer and then another switched live when calling for heat. You could do it by leaving the heating set to constant, which would then give a permanent live, but it would be far easier to replace the programmer.

Yes you can, if you replace the programmer (controller as you call it) with an industry standard backplate fitment, such as Hive or other programmer. No you can’t if you want to keep the existing programmer.

Yes

Understand thank you for explaining. I did mention not waiting to touch the programmer and just replace the thermostat hence the confusion around the replies. All sounds good though, will have a think and either go for a normal digi battery stat or replace the both with Hive etc. thanks again for taking the time to reply

since fitting the digital stat, I've noticed that with the heating off (and water because it's a heat only system), the stat clicks on to call for heat (which i get) but then it clicks off and on during the day which seems a little strange. Would expect it to stay on open and heating until the heating comes on and it tries to reach temp
