I have a house with a single pipe central heating system with an Ideal Mexico (old style) boiler. The boiler appears to be in good working order but the some of the radiators whilst not leaking have seen better days and several of the valves are leaking. The pipework is stainless steel and is about 40 years old if that makes a difference.

Therefore, is it a good idea to simply replace the valves and some of the radiators and not replace the pipe work.

Also, are new radiators more efficient than old ones?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Just replaced quite a few 70s rads. The new ones are much more efficient. Better designed. Not covered in layers of gloss paint. Not full of sludge.

Thanks for the reply. I assume it would be a good idea to flush out the system at some point and therefore should I do this before I replace the radiators so that as much crud is removed before the new rads are added?

Also, the whole house is being redecorated and therefore would it be beneficial to replace the single pipe with a flow and return system? i.e the cost and aggravation of changing it over be outweighed by the benefits. Especially that at some point the boiler will have to replaced with a condensing boiler.
