I need to replace a old gravity boiler to a fully pumped system. One plumber is telling me I need a new pipe installing from the airing cupboard on the first floor to my boiler on the ground floor. Another is telling me that he can do it without installing this pipe. Both have not suggested a pressurised system as the house is apoximately 300 years old with wattle and daub floors with heating pipes running through them all over the place, not looking for moor problems. If we need the new pipe option the only way to do this is to take a large section of the roof off, so I'm rather hoping that it doesn't come to this. Any advise would be appreciates.

Without knowing what the new pipe is intended to be used for, it's impossible to give any opinion on it. Did either of the people who came to look come recommended to you or have you just picked them up randomly?

I'm afraid I don't know either, worked perfectly well before, not wanting anything new installed myself, believe it's something he said he needs to get the system to work with some new regs. Other person said he could reconfigure the existing pipe work, very confused to who is right.

My best guess is that the extra pipe one of the installers is suggesting is the vent pipe. When converting gravity to fully pumped the pipework needs to be reconfigured so that the feed and vent enter just before the pump. So if the feed and pump are at the boiler but the vent is in the airing cupboard. The vent needs to be extended to the boiler. Sometimes this can be quite a lot of work so sealing the system is often easier. Without seeing pics of your pipework configuration at the boiler and cylinder cupboard it is hard to be sure. But I would suggest that the installer that says the pipework needs amending is probably correct

If that is the reason, do you think there may be a possibility of another solution apart from putting in pressurised system. Don't realy fancy that any more than the option of taking the roof off unless no other choice

Get more quotes. Without being able to see your system. It is impossible to suggest anything

Will get onto that in the morning, so far the quotes have been from two of the larger suppliers, both recommended, both having a good look at the job.Hope someone can come up with a solution without the risk of damage to the house. Many thanks for your help so far.
