The 3 port Switchmaster mv on my CH system has failed and I dont think they are available any more. However current makes have the motor in a different plane - can I fit one "on its side" or do I have to alter the pipe work to keep the motor in the vertical plane ?

Dont have a pic but motor block is on top, HW straight to left, CH straight to right and input is straight towards you - modern replacements have the input straight down.

Head (motor) can be fitted either 'upwards' or to the side, it doesnt matter. The only stipulation is the head cannot be underneath the valve, as in the rare event of a leak, water could enter the electrical parts.

you should get away with that one then, sounds pretty standard. were some dodgy switchmasters with ar5e about face pipe connections.
