Replacement radiator size

Hi,

This is a super basic question but I can't seem to find an answer.
If I replace an old radiator with a new one (just to look prettier ) does it have to exactly match the size or can you extend the pipe to make it fit? In this case the pipes that come up through the floor can't be moved as new karndean style flooring has been fitted.

Same size obviously easier ,if smaller extension pieces are available to bridge the gap.
