you`ve got a chrome "bag trap" and a lead waste soldered on with a small "puff" or vent pipe coming off the back...........not a bad job  you should find that a Hep V O waste valve and a Mac Alpine universal coupling with a small piece of plastic waste between the two will get you nicely from the new screwed waste fitting onto the lead cut off @ the right piont lower than that Puff pipe.........both items are on the web @ the manufacturers websites ....have a google

Hi Nige

What you said sounds great - and quite technical! My plumbing skills are fairly basic, so I'd just like to clarify a couple of points.

Are you saying I should cut out the section between the the basin waste outlet to below the vent pipe thus leaving a vertical section of lead pipe about a foot long sticking up out of the floor? ie can I do away with the bag trap and the vent? This would be good because what you can't see in the picture is that the vent pipe disappears into the wall at tap level and is an eyesore! Initially I thought it was an overflow pipe but its too high for that. I take it the bag trap and the vent pipe are not necessary with modern basins?

Cheers

Alex
