Replacing a CC toilet - how to find best fit replacement?

I'm look to replace our nasty coloured CC toilet with a new one, and was wondering what should I be looking for in terms of dimension, outlet position etc. that would make life easier for the replacement?

I'm not looking to change the position of the toilet (perhaps up a few mm because of flooring) - so should the outlet of a new toilet generally be in the same place or is this something that differs greatly?

You will probably have to modify some pipework anyway so I would buy one (CC) you like from a plumbers merchant or other decent quality outlet.
