Replacing a sliding dimmer on a floor lamp

Now this may seem a bit of an obscure question but I own a floor lamp and it has given up the ghost. The problem to a layman such as myself looks to be in the sliding dimmer. However (and here's the problem) it doesn't seem to be a replacable part. I've typed in the name and code on the switch itself and get a nice website in Guandong China. Which I think may only want to sell me a large consignment rather than a singular item.

The lamp is a standing lamp I got from Argos last year and has 3 rather fetching cubes on the end of long stems.
The switch model number is JN3060F made by Jing Neng. The actual model number on the lamp is GYFL2173-3L. The Argos number is MK9 2NW.

The dimmer converts the voltage down and I've looked all over but can't find a replacement. Can anybody help?

are you sure its a dimmer?

But since it

a) is not in the argos website

b) no longer works

c) made in Guandong China

d) probably cheap



The trouble is they are not made from components that will last (as you have found out) as argos dont have the part number you mentioned it may also be they had lots of complaints about it (they did about some other Chinese made light)

there for I suggest you bin it and buy a proper light.

I've got exactly the same JN3060F on an expensive John Lewis floor standing lamp which has 5x 12v 10w bulbs. Cannot find anyone who does a single cheap identical replacement. Mr Resistor do something made in Italy (apparently) for about £30 delivered but my customer only wants to go up to £20 max for parts and I've quoted £10 for my trouble to fit it. Looks to me like a capacitor or 2 has burnt out but I would probably spend £30 of labour trying to repair the dimmer itself and get no where.

cheaper to stick one of those remote control dimmer plugs on it?

Thanks "hairyben" and "taylortwocities" but the dimmer needs to incorporate a 230 to 12v transformer if it is to directly and simply replace the faulty item. A less elegant solution would be an appropriate dimmer followed by an enclosed transformer in the lamp cable.

No mate, thats Avebury Boulevard, Milton Keynes. Their head office.

Argos codes are entirely numerical and consist of 3 digits, a slash and 4 digits.

Hi

Be warned - it's not a dimmer, its an electronic transformer with a built-in dimmer.

If you just replace it with one of the TLC inline dimmers, you will be putting 240V into your 12V lamps...

You either need one of the TLC inline dimmers followed by a suitable electronic transformer, or you need to find an equivalent replacement.

Customer settled for a transformer without an upfront in-line dimmer. I used an aurora AU-E105 which comes without fly leads but with internal connections for mains in and 12v out. Cost £13.62

Hi proelectric, trying to sort one out for my daughters floor lamp, (and to stop her moaning) so i could get this part for hers?

Details i have on hers, 220-240v-50hz

sec11.6v~,20-60 w

12x 12v 5w

Shes still moaning she wont be able to dim it, could you recommend ie part number if there is something i can also add so it will dim, thanks.

or call Mr Resistor www.mr-resistor.co.uk and ask about the combined transformer/dimmer that they told me they could get. It's not in their on-line catalogue.
If you go for the first option, make sure that the transformer you use is suitable to be left accessible - ie there is no way to touch any 230 volt contacts. I used the aurora item and sealed the spare inlet point for a second (loop out) 230 volt cable and taped up the feed cable so that it was also sealed.
