My old mechanical heating control makes a horrible and continuous whirring sound.

Do I need to replace it, or can I easily fix the sound?

If I do need to replace it, how do I change the backplate (which I think will be incompatible with modern controllers)?

It's also not clear whether new heating controllers come with backplates - I cannot seem to tell from product descriptions, and I cannot seem to find backplates sold separately. I thought someone here might know?

I had an old mechanical whirring control that I simply replaced with Hive using the existing back plate and it works just fine.

all new controls will come with their own backplate but you will have to rewire the old one
