Replacing chimney bricks

Hello,

I’ve just installed a new lintel in my fireplace but in the process 2 courses of bricks above the lintel have become loose and I’ve now knocked them out.

Can I install the new live of bricks abouce the lintel vertically? Instead of the traditional horizontally laid.

Yes. If they run all the way to the sides of a breast with outside corners, such that any frogs would be visible you'll perhaps want to do something to hide them, such as cutting the edge ones to be 45 degree triangular so you can continue the face around the corner
