Why waste 560 watts lighting when we have LED??

You will have to keep with your current switch if you have installed the new lighting already.

Dan.

EDIT. Do not touch the bare glass with your fingers. Use cotton gloves or a tissue. The grease/oils in your skin will ruin them in no time. Clean with the wife's nail polish (your nail polish) remover.

MORE EDIT. So you have 2 sets of lights in 2 positions just now and you have one set on in 1 position (wall lights) and the 5 in the centre of the room? So one set is always on? This new switch will just dim them between fully on for 1 set or the other or totally off it you push the button in and out. Well, it wouldn't it would heat up and burn out in a few seconds. I think I am over thinking things here. I haven't slept for 4 days. Sort of like the left and right balance button on the stereo for speakers....

Never handle a quartz lamp with bare fingers, the oil from even a dry finger will affect the hot quartz and result in premature failure of the lamps.

EDIT Danechip beat me to it

Not sure about nail polish remover. Isopropyl alcohol might be a better cleaner

Good to know. These are the old bulbs though. These are all coming off.

Hi,

So I have moved into a new home and the above were already fitted. In one room, there are seven wall lights, all the same as shown above. Five are on one circuit with a basic on/off switch, two on another with a basic on/off switch. The lights are so bright for one room so I figured I could just replace the switch with a dimmer to bring the brightness down. Last week I removed six of the lights and just the one was bright enough to light the room in the evening.

Leave everything as it is and rethink.

What is going in its place?

Light fittings to remain, I just bought all new bulbs as a few had gone and I wanted to have consistent light colour.
I was just planning on replacing the two switches with dimmers.

I would send those new lamps back and fit new light fittings in LED.

I have never seen a domestic dimmer device, only industrial.

10p an hour to run with the 7 you have all working, the saving in leccy bills would pay for them in no time.

You still have the earthing issue at the switch to sort, and it may be the same in the lights location too. This means you can not use ANY metal fitting (unless it's class 2 type, usually plastic)

I'm struggling to find dimmable R7s LED bulbs in 78mm.

When you say you have never seen a domestic dimmer device, do you mean like the one I posted at the start of this thread?
