Replacing replacement windows

Just moved into a new (1980's) house which has replacement windows. Some of the windows are obviously older than others and have various problems. The window to the bathroom has dirt between the panes. Trying to compare this to the others I see that the black rubber "beading" on the inside, is just one long strip, bent at the corners. In one corner is a small gap. The beading on the outside seems to be okay, it's in four strips, the same as the newer replacement windows.

Now for the question!!!

Can I strip out the old beading, clean the window panes and replace with new beading? Or do I need a whole new unit?

Whatever the answer is, how do I do it???

I think you need to get some new sealed units. They are readily available. It is impractical to dismantle, clean, and reseal the double-glazed units.

Thanks for your reply JohnD. Does this mean replacing the whole window - including the frame? Or can I get just the sealed glass units?

You need to remove the glazing beads and the units will just pull out. If the window beads are on the outside you may need to remove the rubber gasket from the inside first before the beads on the outside will come off. They might also have security tape on them which you will need to carefully cut through with a sharp blade and replace when you fit the new units. Quite stright forward to do but be careful that you dont damage the beads when removing them and make sure you put them back in the same place they came from.
