we have a timber frame house so panicking about damp/rot! Retaining wall on the side seems to be letting water accumulate next to the house. How I stop this? Do I put gravel down to soak it or pipes to drain it away? (Previous owner was a bad builder so I don’t trust he knew what he was doing!)

Yeah, I'd be concerned as you are.

We always put down smooth concrete with falls, when creating a narrow trap between new buildings.
