Reused Second Hand Materials - Thoughts

As a follow up to a seperate thread I wanted to know to what extent it is possible to buy second hand steel beams and wood

Suppose I was doing some carpentry in the loft - Could I not source floor joists from here

Does anyone seriously consider using reclaimed stuff to keep costs down?

I would not consider using second hand timber for fear of wrecking my circular saw blade. However, decorative seasoned timber is ok for specialist feature work.

Second hand steel is ok so long as you can prove it is the correct weight etc and has no dodgy provenance.
