Rev's drop and car stalls when changing gear?

Hi

I hope someone can help me.

My car has developed a problem..

When I need to slowdown and change down a gear (at junctions, turning etc) my car rev's drop right down when I push in the clutch and the engine stalls.

I can get the car started again pretty quick but my power steering locks up and it becomes dangerous.

Any ideas what the cause might be and how I could sort it out?
