Ridges from whacker plate (artificial grass install)

Hi I’m trying to install artificial grass myself and at the stage of compacting the type 1. I’ve never used type 1, or a compactor before.

I’m finding I’m getting ridges with every pass of the whacker plate, particularly when trying to turn (which isn’t easy in the tight corners).

Am I missing some technique to avoid this? Worried it would show through when finished. Also I’m thinking when I get to doing the whacker plate on the grano dust it will be even harder to avoid this!

Won’t show thru , have faux grassed over soil, sand, concrete etc impossible to tell which when laid.
Thin layer of sand or dust on that and it’s good to go .

Just use the back of the rake to even it out after whacking. The miniscule thickness of sand or dust is of no consequence.

If you're leaving ridges then the material is still moving and not fully compacted.

In your picture there are several "boney" areas where thee isn't enough dust to bind everything together solidly. Type 1 does have a tendancy to segregate. The material also looks very dry: type 1 compacts much better if it's damp.

Thanks for replies, I’ll go over it a bit more. Do you think I should sprinkle some sand/grano dust into the “boney” areas first?
