Not long moved into a house, the downstairs sitting room has 4 double plug sockets in it, when I've looked there only seems to be one 2.5mm cable of twin and earth in each of them, my question is can this be right as I assumed it would have to be on a ring and have 2 cables in each, if so is there a way of checking if this is OK, I have a multimeter if that would help.
Thanks

If its an older property it was quite common to have a junction box near every socket, usually under the floor.

There are many ways to wire sockets, In commercial building the ring final may go junction box to junction box, with a spur to each socket.

The main point is cables must not be overloaded.

As I think others here have also seen, I've seen this in some modern bungalows (with solid floors) in which the entire ring is above the ceiling, consisting of just JBs, with a drop from each JB to just one socket.

Kind Regards, John
