In all seriousness though, my learned friend, my house has no slate course but it does have 2 courses of class'a's and was built around 1930.
It doesnt suffer from any rising damp either.
I think, possibly, the old cement based compo can deteriorate to allow capillary action. as i said before, konrad didnt claim to have tested all brick/ mortar mixes.
and i dont think lime is the be all and end all either
