My central heating is not working, although hot water is.

As a first check I thought I'd test the room thermo - an old honeywell dial type.

I used my mains testing screwdriver to check the live feed and it did not show any current in.

Question is, is where is the live feed sourced from ? is it the boiler (on another floor) or is it direct from the mains ? I have a light switch immediately next to it which I can spur from if this is possible / allowable ?

Thanks in advance

1st things 1st, throw away the neon electrical tester screwdriver, these are potentially very dangerous. Only ever use a VDE/BS rated tester for testing mains electricity.
The thermostat should be powered from the mains via the CH junction box. Do not feed it from the lighting circuit.

The live feed to the stat should come from a programmer ( if you have one ) the programmer will be either seperate or built in to the boiler.

NO! Do not connect the thermostat into the lighting circuit! Boiler controls MUST be on the same circuit as the boiler

We need to stop doing this rob! Great minds think alike as they say

But yours seems to think a minute quicker than mine.
