Can anyone recommend a good room thermostat, preferably a digital wireless one that can be moved from room to room? There must, however, be zero voltage on the connection to the boiler circuit board. As soon as the fitter saw that it needed to be 0 volts, he disappeared and has not been seen since! Are they hard to come by and/or expensive or something?

Wireless room stats, of which there are many good makes (Honeywell, Danfoss, etc.), send signals to a base station which is hard wired to the boiler. This would need to have voltage free contacts to take the extra low voltage from the boiler circuits, but I should think that is pretty much standard now.
