Cooking oil won't work, extra virgin olive oil i find works best
If you mean the latch is getting stuck in the frame, perhaps the latch tongue is pressing too hard against the staple (keep). If it used to work OK, the door might have warped or swollen, perhaps from damp. If it is an old panelled door it can be racked back to shape quite easily.
If it is an interior door, you can take off and bend or file the edge of the staple for a looser fit. if it is an external door, the keep may be a substantial steel item. Show us some photos.
If the lever handle does not fully withdraw the latch, it might be wear or poor fitting.
