Routing electrical cable: changing orientation from flat to on-side

I am changing the timer for my immersion heater.
For the existing timer, the ribbon mains cable enters the airing cupboard and is fastened flat to the wall. The cable then goes below the timer and is twisted and routed up via a J loop to enter the timer so that the cable is on its side.
The new timer uses a back box, which requires the mains cable to enter in a flat orientation.
How can I make a J loop without twisting the cable orientation?

I am starting to think it may be best to fit some sort of junction box for changing cable direction.
Rather than using cable clips to reroute a cable to make a J or L shape.
