Rover 620 rev problem

Evening All
I have a problem with a Rover 620Se petrol engine. When the car is stationary at say traffic lights etc the engine keeps on revving up on its own without touching the accelorator. Checking the rev counter it moves up from around 1000 RPM (tick over) to about 2000 RPM and back down to tick over again. It does this for about the first 10/15 mins of a journey and then goes back to revving as normal.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Hi

could be the idle air control vavlave or the throttle posostion sensor.

Bearing in mind that when they reach around 100k then they need the fuel system cleaning out. Not expensive but makes a big diffference.
