I wouldn't say "cowboy" - they may well have said to the home owner that it will be extra to get rid of the spoil he/she said "shove it anywhere"
To be honest, I would have inspected the old chimney to see if it was usable.
Lots happens in 90 years.
Things were commonly done back in the day. that wouldn't;t pass today but vice versa
