Running waste pipe for a shower

Hello,
I'm fitting a shower, and need to run the waste across the room. Is it usual practise to cut holes in the joists and run them under the floorboards? The pipe is 40mm so the holes are going to have to be quite big.

It's usual practise to work out which way the joists run before installing the shower! you can't really run a 40mm waste through the joists.

If you do, beware of letting fatties into the bathroom
