Our outside gable wall is made of light coloured fairly porous brick and has become discoloured over last 2 years with intermittent drips from the overflow pipe from our central heating boiler. I have tried brushing in bleach to the bricks with limited success. Can anyone suggest a cheap simple method of neutralising the stains and ensuring stained bricks blend in with the surrounding area.

tell us more about the make and model of your boiler, and where this pipe is attached. It should not drip.

Sometimes you can get rust marks off with a stiff nylon or wire brush. Use a brass brush as a steel one will groove the bricks fast. Bleach does not affect rust. Clean it dry as water will wash the rust particles deeper in.

No point in doing it before you cure the drip.

Photos would help too. //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=129539

Thank you John D - I've cured the drip so should be no new staining - ive used stiff bristle plastic brush which has helped a little but not removed stains. Ive just uploaded a photo to Dave's House album but not sure if you can find this. Can something be applied to blend in with surrounding colouring.

It looks like the fella who fitted that boiler didn't have a ladder.
He hasn't sealed the flue or terminated the pipe properly.

I remember Tommy Walsh dyeing some existing bricks so that they all matched and it did look great when finished.

You would have to do the lot though but worth looking into. :D
