salus RF5OO thermostat

Hi, Does anyone know a really good thermostat I can have fitted, it needs to have a simple on/off setting aswell as the normal am/pm programmes.

At the moment I have a salus RF500 and it is absolotuley useless. If i dont change it soon ill end up smashing it up, its driving me mad.

Even when its meant to be off, the heating comes on and when i try to turn it off, the unit goes off but the green light on the receiver thing is still on. There are times i dont want it on and it just comes on. Its going to cause a divorce soon as thats all we argue about, the bloody thermostat, haha.

Do you know how to set the timer on it.
Well I say timer it never goes off, it is temperature controlled.
You need to set the temperature for minimum and maximum you require at certain times.

Radio frequency stats can be problematic sometimes. Whilst not the cheapest, a Honeywell CM927 shouldn't give you too much grief, or see you in the divorce courts.

You may have your set back temperature set too high, therefore the boiler would continually firing.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLYS.

I'm finding it so frustrating that i can't just turn the bloody thing off, I don't want it to come on at all at the moment because the weathers fine now. How do i stop it comming on at all? The sun shines outside and I come home to a really hot house, my poor dog is feeling the heat.

Is there any way I can stop it comming on, unless I want it on?

I used to have one of thosee dial controls on the wall and the timer control on my boiler, that was so much easier to use.

Is that Honeywell one you reccomended the same sort of idea as this awful Salus? or can it be turned off? thanks

The honeywells are a quality piece of kit, with the all important OFF button on the slider, althought it will kick the boiler in if your falls below 5deg.

Better still, safely isolate supply, carefully unscrew receiver & stat from wall, take into garden and stamp on the f*****. Take Honeywell and replace in reverse order.

I don't think anyone posting has ever managed to get these to work.

Mine’s worked faultlessly from day one & has been up running for around 18 months now. You either have a faulty unit or haven’t quiet mastered how to set it up correctly. I find the quickest way to turn it off for a day/weekend away is to hit the frost button; but then it won’t come back on until you press it again.

Just set all the cycles at something like 10 degrees and it wont fire up, until it gets cold again.
If you do a manual setting by doing as mentioned in a previous post (ianniann) by holding the button down, it will only stay at that level until the timer reaches the next cycle setting.

Plenty of people get them to work, but there is an awful low of crap written about how to do it so no wonder people get confused. Case in point, PrenticeBoyofDerry who either didn't read my instructions or doesn't know what he is talking about.

Sorry ianniann, you press both up and down together. I did read your post but my straw filled head did not take the information in.
I actually have one on my central heating system, for some odd reason the "together" bit of your post did not register with me.
You have taught me two valuable lessons one how to turn the thing off (I have not tried it yet, so I am trusting you on this).
and the other is to read posts more carefully.
The latter will still be a problem, due to straw and head mixture
But I do humbly apologize

HAHAHAHA, That post about taking it into the garden and stamping on it made my night. I so am on the verge of doing just that.

I will try the frost button as someone said they use it.

When i press the up and down arrows together, the unit goes off but not the boiler. The little flame symbol also goes off but the heating stays on.

I will definately be changing it to Honeywell.

Now this is probably a really stupid question, but i'm going to ask it anyway. Who do i get to change it for me an electrician or a plumber?

One of the more annoying things about wireless controllers! The Salus does this from time to time, but it can affect any wireless controller. If you get this more than once a blue moon, try changing the connection channel, check the batteries, or move out of that solid copper house

Job for an electrician at this point. You already have the correct wires coming from the boiler so there is no need to open it up if you're going to fit an equivalent controller. Boiler fitters also should possess the relevant skills, but I've seen them do some pretty dodgy things with wires especially when it isn't their pet gadget they're messing with.

Last piece of advice. Investigate very carefully which controller before you fit it. The Honeywell is recommended frequently on this forum but I personally think it is a piece of crap. All these modern electronic gadgets have far more horsepower than they need to control a boiler so they do lots of fancy things, and you might not like them all. Like the Salus being "on" all the time, or the Honeywell cycling your boiler every 10 minutes.

Food for thought; be sure youve got it right, if you’ve failed to master the knack of correctly programming the Salus, I doubt you will fair much better with a Honeywell!
