I am looking to purchase a dressing table. Its material is beechwood and MDF. Its currently distressed white. Can I sand this down and re paint with gloss?

yes. a light sand with 120 paper should be sufficient. or if you want a flat finish take it outside and work your way through the grades (from the coarsest you can get up to 120) of sandpaper using a power sander.
distressed MDF sounds interesting?!

Thank you for your advice. Hummm.... I'm not convinced about the distressed MDF look either!
