Sandstone edging question?

Hi,

I have a path that has single brick steps every ~900mm and I need to put sandstone edging blocks to keep soil from washing onto path.
The question is, how wide a gap for pointing between blocks do I need, and what is the best way to get the pointing to stey in place until set? duct tape?

About 10-15mm , nothing is required to keep pointing in place if it’s mixed to correct consistency.

Are you sure I dont need tape?
