Have just bought / installed a wickes Saniflo System. As soon as I turn the power on the pump runs - even though there's no water in it. Anyone got any good ideas?

OK - I filled it with water and it seems to be functioning OK. However I run the shower and it's backing up quicker that the pump is starting. I have installed the pipe fall at 25mm per 1m as per the instructions. The manual does mention installing an optional non- return valve - but I can't see how that would help? Any ideas anyone?
