Scammed!

Yesterday, we had guy going door to door, touting for roofing work. They got the usual response from us. Today, I spotted the same individual, part of a group of six, arrive in two vehicles, a set of ladders, only two doing any actual work. I checked the registrations of both vehicle, none of which were taxed, MOT'ed, or insured. I checked the address given on a leaflet, they had insisted, on pushing through our door - checking the address on google, it showed a bit of waste ground.

The guys were walking about on the bare tiled rooves, one clearing the easy-to-access gutters out with a pair of kitchen scissors, ignoring the rest. Then putting a splash of mortar, on the easy-to-access, lower hipped roof ridge tiles. We sent the homeowner's a text, warning them they were roving scammers.

Never, ever, ever, trust anyone knocking at the door, touting for any sort of work. Genuine skilled tradesmen do not need to waste time going door to door, they are far too busy, and their order books will be full.

Years back when I lived at home, we had an old couple living next door. They made the mistake of saying 'yes' to someone going door to door asking 'need any gardening done?'

They cut back all his prized shrubs and bushes to within an inch of their life, quite a few beyond that i.e. they were dead. To rub salt into the wound, they had charged him something like £300 for the privilege of their expertise, and remember I'm talking maybe 30ish years back.

I class all these people as scum.

Years back when I lived at home, we had an old couple living next door. They made the mistake of saying 'yes' to someone going door to door asking 'need any gardening done?'

Even longer back, when I laid the slab for my garage, all the top-soil I dug out, I barrowed to the back of my garden, and piled it on a narrow strip of wasteland. Soon after that, we 'aquired' that land, so we needed the land back and level. Going door to door, were a couple of students, looking to earn a few bob, in the uni-holidays, so my partner invited them to price up clearing the soil. They quoted £200, so I said to take them up on it. They worked hard for two days, cleared half of it, and were totally kn++kered. We agreed they had earned it, and gave them the £200. The rest, I dug a hole and buried it.
