I've managed to scratch what appears to be some sort of varnish coating on a wooden kitchen counter at my new house (although it appears to be a varnish of sorts it's really really thin).

Pictures below. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve/remedy this?

Thank you. Does the whole part of that worktop need rubbing back or just the local area?

I take it a "touching up" isn't possible? Very hesitant of making a worse job of it.
