Thanks for the comments everyone. I thought it was a sloppy job. We are having some custom made doors fitted in the next few months and I will ask the carpenter if he can fix this.
It was stained with some pine stain. It actually looks quite rustic and I don't mind the look, but those filled holes and surround looks awful.
