Screws for upvc hinges

Do i have to use the specialist upvc screws for fixing hinges or can I use standard stainless steel self tappers ?? As a matter of interest what is the funny shaped end for on upvc screw ??

Funny shaped end is for driving the screw into the plastic without the need to drill a pilot hole first.and yes any stainless screw will do.
