We have put down some black slate floor tiles. We cleaned them after laying as they had paint etc on them with some turps. The tile seemed to soak this up they come up quite pale and washed out looking. We have tried some kind of resin sealer which brings them back to a dark colour again and look great but a few weeks later the white washed out look comes straight back. Is there a more permanent solution?

it seems you didnt seal them pre laying, with slate its best to seal minimumn 2 times before you finished the job, when you open the pack and before grouting, but as you havent my suggestion would be to get some lithofin "cement away", available to buy online, at good tile stores and sh*t ones too

now called cement rsidue remover it seems

You may wish to consider the traditional way of sealing. That is the use of Boiled Linseed Oil, thinned down a bit with genuine white spirit or turps say 50/50 in order to penertrate easier & to avoid less stickyness. Test a small area first. I have found this to be the best method for maximising darkness.
LTP also do a wash maintainer which reinforces the linseed seal everytime you wash the floor
