kitchen floor tiles

Can anyone help???

The flooring in my kitchen is dark slate (?) tiles. A lot of people love them but I can't stand them - they're very dark, chipped, hard to clean and always look dirty!

I'd love to replace them but I imagine it would be a big job and you'd have to take up the whole floor... Are there any other alternatives? Could I tile over them with something else for instance? Or lay some other kind of flooring over the top?

Any help gratefully received!

cover with latex self leveling compound then stick lino or laminate flooring over it..
