Try using MDF sealant sold for the purpose (try Rustin's, Johnstone Paints, ICI Dulux Trade, etc) ....... Just make sure that the finish is compatible with the sealant. You'll need to coat the edges a couple of times and denib between coats as the sealer will raise the grain. At a pinch this job can bew done with diluted French polish (shellac).
