I have two side walls of plastered block and a rear wall of plasterboard.

If one assumed the tiles and grout were water proof then there would seem to be little need to seal the wall but most professionals like to.

What are the pros and cons of sealing the wall?

The stuff used is usually a grey latex paint. What is it properly called and where best to buy it?

If you do not seal your wall you will run the risk of water ingressing into your substrate.

Tiles and grout alone may not give your substrates enough water resistance as no grout is fully water proof, and it will be the grout joints where the risk may lie. By 'tanking' the substrates before tiling and grouting you will give them additional protection.

]Weber.sys protect[] is a good tanking system for one shower/wetroom unit. I have only used it once, but is easy to use, as long as the instructions are followed.

Wow, that's a seriously expensive stuff ( £84 ! ) and a big pot too.

Is there not something smaller and thus cheaper that I can buy?

Does standard tile adhesive stick effectively to it?

The 5kg pot comes with 4kg of the membrane, a 1kg primer and a 10m2 roll of tape.

If you to purchase all of these separately you would be looking at over £100, and you would have some of the membrane at least left over as the membrane when sold seperately comes in a 7kg bucket.
