They normally ask for proof of PLI and some not all work on a payment structure, that you invoice and allow 30 days for payment via BAC's.
I would be asking them about this and also thinking about some contractual agreement.

My strange response was due to a few items on your post.

For example

I wonder if it includes a van,

what will I be expected to bring with me to the job

Now call me funny but if I were to be in your situation I would have asked all of these questions and more. In fact I would be surprised when conducting an interview that these questions were not asked.

So in reality not such a strange response after all.
